New Idea for Work - Keep Your Job Off Social Media

It is wonderful to keep your job by remembering to keep use social media like a responsible adult.

It seems that almost every day there are new laws being passed all over the country concerning the activities of workers on social media both inside and outside the workplace. I am located in Pennsylvania where you can be fired for good reason, bad reason or no reason at all if you have no employment contract and you are not being fired for a reason that is against public policy. For the most part, if you do not have an employment contract, as long as you are not fired for age, race, color, sex or sexual orientation you have no right to sue. I have seen people fired for liking the wrong football team or for making the boss sick.

This leads to back to social media. It is important to be careful what you do on social media because once it hits the internet it is very hard to take it back or explain away how other people interpret what you write.

It should be abundantly clear that it is not appropriate to use the internet and social media during work hours to disparage the company which employs you. However, every day there are people who sit at work, on work computers and spend hours on Facebook writing bad things about things about their bosses and co-workers. Just as bad are the people who go home and share photos and status updates about how horrid everyone they work with is to be around. Anyone who uses social media has seen those updates where a person spills all the work gossip all over the internet. While we will read those updates and laugh, none of us wants a person like that working at our organization.
What you say on social media about your employer will effect your time at work. An employer is not going to trust an employee who spreads bad news about the company on social media. Keep in mind that even if your employer does not fire you for your social media actions may impact decision on giving you promotions, raises and other opportunities. Additionally, it is not only your current employer who will make judgments about your social media behavior. Co-workers, friends and potential future employers will make judgments about what you share on social media. The things you share and the way you share them give an impression of you without you having said a word.

Like it or not, bad mouthing your employer, supervisors and co-workers on social media will effect your work life. You can cause damage in your professional life by being careless with social media. So, the question for you this wonderful day is, are you using social media like a responsible adult?

Entertain with Technology

It is terrific to find ways to use existing technology for entertainment.

Like many people who read this blog, I am a technology nut. I have the cell phone, the Kindle tablet, the Kindle reader, the laptop and a bunch of other gadgets. I really like  my gadgets and do not plan to give them up. What I enjoy more than just having gadgets is getting the most entertainment I can out of them.

Take my notebook computer for example. I use it to write my blog, run my business and to look for more business. When I purchased my computer I made sure it had a few features that I would be able to use for fun, including the following:
  • camera (web camera with video capability)
  • microphone
  • good speakers
  • big screen
  • lots of memory
  • built-in games
This means I can use my computer for making silly videos with my kids and taking photos. The microphone makes it easy to record whatever it is I want to say, sing or record for posterity. The microphone also makes it easy to use Skype, Google+  Hangout and other social media avenues. Netflix is such an inexpensive entertainment source and the big screen makes it easy for me to enjoy movies while working or relaxing. Another feature I like is the chess game that came with the computer so I can practice my game. I am hoping to be able to beat my ten-year old son one day. There is no substitute for a lot of computer memory except for maybe more computer memory.

My Kindle 3G  is one of the older ones that has unlimited 3G internet access for life. While the screen is black and white only, it is nice to have access to the internet so that I can check Facebook, Twitter and other social media when I take a break from reading. I also enjoy having music play while I read. I have several games installed on my e-reader including Scrabble and chess. Did I mention I want to beat my ten-year old son at chess?  My Kindle Fire tablet is set up to work as a mini laptop that I use for work. However I have games, movies, videos, music and all kinds of things to provide entertainment for me and a few things to entertain the kids in an emergency.

Almost everyone uses the cell phone for more than just telephone calls. Most are internet ready, play music, hold ebooks, videos and photographs. How many people have ignored telephone calls because of an exciting word game with friends?

Use your technology to make the things you need to do for work and home easier and smoother. But please do not forget to add some entertaining features  to make your technology more entertaining. So the question for you this terrific day is what is your favorite way of using technology to entertain?

Time to Start or Restart A Business

There are millions of people all over the United States who want to start or re-start businesses of their own. It reminds me of a riddle I read on Facebook once:

Fact:   There were five birds sitting on a telephone wire. Three planned to go to Florida for the winter.
Question: How many birds were left?
Answer:   Five because planning to do something is not the same as actually doing something.

If you have been planning to start or re-start a business, this is the perfect time to go from planning and get to actually doing it. In order to start or re-start your business make a plan, create a business plan. Your plan doesn't have to be a long complicated document, but you should at the very least look at each of the following areas and put together a few sentences on each:
  • description and executive summary aka what will your business do and what are your qualifications for running the business
  • personnel aka who will be the staff, workforce, who will do the work at the business
  • marketing aka how will your business attract customers and make a name for itself
  • current finances aka what is your business' current financial condition
  • financial projections aka what your business' finances will look like over the next 1 to 5 years
When you take the leap from planning to start or re-start a business, you can do it in a variety of ways including:
  • quit your current job and go full force with the new business
  • continue to work at your current job and work at your own venture part-time
  • work your current job and work your business full-time as well (work two jobs)
The method you end up following will be based on a variety of factors including:
  • current financial condition
  • amount of savings
  • type of job you are currently working
  • nature of the business you wish to start or re-start
  • obligations to family and stakeholders in your life
Everyone is familiar with the saying, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail," is especially crucial when you are starting or re-starting a business.  Once you make the plan, the next step, the crucial step is to start carrying out the plan. In the Bible, we are advised that faith without work is dead. Similarly a plan without action is dead. If you have been planning to start or re-start a business,  get up and start, move toward your goal. Take some action. If you have been planning to start a business for quite some time, start moving. It's like eating an elephant, one bite at a time, you can get it done, it is easy to do, easy to manage.
012813 start a business jmjd
So, if you start taking action and just move one step per day toward your goal you will get there. In addition, the momentum of moving toward your goal, of starting or re-starting your business will keep you moving toward the goal. So, the question for you this magnificent day is, what business have you been dreaming about starting or re-starting?

Balancing Home and Work By Sharing Stories

Many people go to work each day, perform their duties and then come home to their families and never talk about work. Similarly, many people go to work each day and share nothing of their personal lives with their co-workers. On the surface, this may seem like a good way of doing things, keeping work and home in separate categories. However, things are not always what they seem. By keeping work and home in separate categories that never intermingle a person keeps her life out of balance. There are a wide variety of ways to keep work and home in balance including:
Another way to strike a balance between work and home is to share happy stories from work when you are at home.

photo credit: Ozyman via photopin cc
photo credit: Ozyman via photopin cc

When you work outside the home, there are two parts to your existence, the work you and the home you. It is an extremely hard and in most cases unnecessary task to keep the two separated.People go to work for many reasons including:
  • for personal fulfillment and growth
  • to earn money to provide for family
  • in order to carry out a mission
  • to meet professional responsibilities
  • to earn money to carry out one's true purpose in life

Whatever the reason for one going to work, it is a significant part of one's life in chief part because of the large amount of time spent at work. It is only natural for family members, children in particular to be curious about what a person does at work. All too often, family members only hear stories about work when there is a problem or something goes wrong. This gives a false and perhaps one-sided or imbalanced view of the workplace. It is a better practice to share good stories from work with the family. This way of doing things will make children feel there is something good to be gained from going to work. It may also encourage children to want to seek work and independence when they reach maturity.

012513 share work stories jmjd

With all things balance is important. As a result, when you share happy stories about work with your family, it keeps them from resenting the place that keeps you away from them for so many hours each day. Additionally, it is good to model a happy workplace for your children. It may also help you to feel better about yourself and your work if you find a happy thing to share with your family members each day. In your life, look to achieve balance between work and home by sharing happy work stories with your family. So, the question for you this fantastic day is do you share happy work stories with your family?

Succeed in Business by Copying What Works

It is thrilling to succeed in business by copying what works.

There are a myriad of ways to succeed at running your own business including the following:

thrilling Thursday, copy what works, copy, succeed at work, reinvent the wheel
photo credit: toner via photopin cc

Many business owners know that a large part of operating a business is to be innovative, to build a better mousetrap. There are numerous accounts of companies that have become wildly successful because of entrepreneurs with great new ideas. Innovation is a necessary quality that cannot be overstated or overrated. At the same time, many entrepreneurs get into trouble because instead of running their businesses, they are spending too much time trying to reinvent the wheel.

What does it mean, to try to reinvent the wheel? It means that there is an established, perfectly good way of doing things, a practice that consistently yields good results but an entrepreneur refuses to use it. the established methods are proven to yield the desired results. But the reinventing the wheel entrepreneur refuses to use these methods. Instead, the entrepreneur looks for a different way to do things because it must be possible for a car to roll along with oval or square wheels.  For these entrepreneurs, results don't matter, all that matters is doing things differently.

As an entrepreneur, when you are planning operations and when you are looking for ways to get things done, use the following as a guide to determine if you are unnecessarily reinventing the wheel or being innovative when it is needed:
  • are current methods failing to yield good results in your business
  • do you have adequate time and resources to devote to research and development
  • do you plan to test your new ideas before putting them fully into operation in your business
If you answered no to these questions, it is not time for you to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it may be time for you to look around at things that are working. As an entrepreneur, you must recognize there is a balance to be found between being innovative and copying what works from your successful competitors. Certain practices are tried and true because they work, they have stood the test of time. Those practices should be respected if they are continuing to provide good results. Keep in mind your business is a real thing to be respected, not a toy to be ignored. So the question for you this thrilling day is how do you determine if you are reinventing the wheel or making needed innovative changes?

How to Succeed at Work - Respect Those in Authority

It is wonderful to succeed at work by respecting those in authority.

Many people are at work complaining about how much they hate the supervisor, how stupid the boss is and how no one running the company has a good idea about anything. For these people respect for those in authority is a foreign concept. It is no wonder that people with this attitude find it difficult to succeed in the workplace. It reminds me of a line from a Staples Singers song, "if you disrepect everyone that you run into, how in the world to you expect anyone to respect you?"

Let's say you are the smartest person, the hardest worker, best person ever at your job. That does not excuse your lack of respect for those in authority. Respect for those in authority is a Biblical principal as well as good manners.  There are a few synonyms for respect including:
  • regard
  • esteem
  • reference
  • deference
  • consideration

Those in authority at your place of employment make it possible for you to collect your paycheck. That alone is sufficient for them to be treated with respect. When you treat those in authority with respect you do the following:
  • show up to work early enough so that you are at your work station at start time, not entering the building
  • do your job completely and with a good attitude
  • do not verbally disparage those in authority during the day at the workplace
  • talk to those in authority in a calm manner that reflects esteem
These rules of behavior for how to treat those in authority with respect does not mean you have to like those in authority. In fact, it does not matter at all whether or not you like or admire those in authority at your place of employment. Like has nothing to do with it. Respect requires that you exercise proper behavior even if you do not like those in authority. The main take away is that respect is something you do because of who you are and because it is right.

If you are at a point where you are no longer able to treat those with authority with respect, it is time for you to seek employment elsewhere. If you do decide to seek employment elsewhere, leave in a respectful manner because you may encounter those same people in a different place of employment. So, the question for you this wonderful day is, what do you do at work to show respect for those in authority?

It's Work, Go to Work and Don't Play Around

Here is a new idea for some people: go to work and actually work. There are quite a few people all across America who go to work each day and look for ways to skip as much work as possible. Think about how little sense that makes. It really does not make sense to go to work and complain to that you have to well, work. But, each day millions of people are going to work and spending countless house figuring out ways to look busy while not actually being busy doing the work their employers are paying them to do. Just as you should be grateful for work and should show up like a grown up at work,  when you go to work, you should actually work.

wonderful Wednesday, work, grown up

What if instead of complaining about having to work at work people got a new attitude and went to work and actually worked. Here are some benefits of actually working at work:
  • increased productivity
  • positive attention for supervisor and co-workers
  • improved reputation
  • increased chance of promotion and advancement
  • less stress and aggravation from trying to hide idle behavior
  • increased comfort resulting from doing the right thing in the right place
  • good application of the Golden Rule
One thing that employees must realize is that work, is just that work. There is an explicit agreement between employers and employees. Employees come to work to do a set of assigned tasks and responsibilities. In exchange for the performance of those tasks and responsibilities the employer provide employees with monetary compensation. If you are one of the employees only working some of the time and only doing some of your tasks and responsibilities, would you like it if your employer only paid you part of your expected salary?  In most cases, the answer is a resounding no!

Once upon a time, people were taught, "Your word is your bond." It meant if you said something, it was true, it could be trusted and people would bank on it. When you accept an offer of employment, you give your word. That word should be a bond, an agreement, a promise that your employer can trust and depend upon.

Starting today, go to work and actually work, do what you agreed to do, keep your word. So, the question for you this wonderful day is, are you actually working at work?

Wonderful Wednesday - Show Up Like A Grown Up At Work

Wonderful Wednesday - when it comes to work it is wonderful to show up like a grown up.

Each wonderful Wednesday throughout the month of January will be dedicated to new ways of looking at work. Last week, was about being grateful to have work.  In future weeks we will look at:
  • It's work, don't play around
  • Respect those in authority
  • Keep work off your private social media
This week we are focusing on the idea of showing up like a grown up at work.

photo credit: Jeremy Levine Design via photopin cc wonderful Wednesday, grown up, work, responsibility

A basic reality of life is that many of us must work for a living. Some of us work for others and some of us work for for ourselves. No matter which is the case, the fact remains that we must work to earn a living. When you must work for a living it is important for you to show up like a grown up.  Grown ups are responsible, mature and able to handle the responsibilities of work.  Look at the following differences between children at work and grown ups at work:

Children at work
  • show up just before work starts or late
  • play around all day
  • refuse to accept any extra assignments
  • counter-productive in team tasks
  • treat work as if it is a playground
Adults at work
  • show up at work station at least 15 minutes before start time
  • work throughout the day
  • accept extra assignments within reason
  • are a valuable part of team assignments
  • treat work as if what is being done is important
The economy is improving and in many industries, finding a job is easier today than it has been for quite a while. That does not change the fact that if you want to remain gainfully employed or want to continue operating a successful business, you must, without exception, show up like a grown up everyday and actually work at work. So, the question for you this wonderful Wednesday is what are your tips for showing up like a grown up at work?

Terrific Tuesday - Use Technology in a New Way - Cell Phone Camera

Terrific Tuesday - it is terrific to use our technology in new ways to make life easier.

As time goes by the devices we use become more and more sophisticated, smaller and more common place. Not that long ago, people could not imagine the need for cellular phones. Now it is almost impossible to live without them. Since we are carrying smart phones that are full of all finds of features and applications, it makes sense to use our phones for more than just making telephone calls. The feature we will be discussing today is the cell phone camera.
photo credit: simmessa via photopin cc
photo credit: simmessa via photopin cc terrific Tuesday, cell phone, new use, technology, camera

While the camera on the typical cell phone will not replace a professional grade camera, it is more than sufficient for many purposes.  The following are some great uses for the camera on your cellular phone:
  • Comparison Shopping - When shopping for items at more than one store, take a photograph of the store name, item, price tag and location in the store so you can find it easily later
  • Parking Lot Assistant - In a busy mall parking lot take a picture of your parked car and the steps to the elevator. The cars next to you may leave but following your pictures backwards  from elevator, around a post etc.,  will get you back to your car
  • Phone Number Catcher - when you go buy houses for sale or rent, store locations and the like, take a photo of the phone number instead of just writing it down. This will help you remember the atmosphere of the place, help with transposition errors and be a better memory aid than just a phone number alone.
  • Grocery List - take a photo of kitchen grocery items as you run out and save them in a separate file. This way you can flip through the photos as you shop and pick up all the items you use and need. Also when shopping take photographs of interesting combinations at sample stations so you can re-create the ones you like at home later.
  • Receipt Records - take photographs of your shopping receipts and save them on your computer. Many stores need your receipt information for returns, warranty service and the like. If you have a photograph of the receipt, the store will be able to get the necessary information from the receipt and help you when the original receipt has disappeared.
These are just a few of the novel uses for the camera on your cellular telephone. There are many more. So the question for you this terrific Tuesday is what are some great ways you use the camera on your cellular phone?

Magnificent Monday - Take Action Now on Something New - Attitude

Magnificent Monday - it is magnificent to take action now with a new attitude.
Each magnificent Monday in January will be devoted to the idea of taking action now by looking at something in a new way. At this time of year everyone makes lists of new things they will accomplish and all kinds of great and wonderful achievements they will complete by the end of the year. In upcoming magnificent Monday articles we will look at:
  • healthy living
  • following a dream
  • starting or re-starting a business
This week our focus is taking action now by getting a new attitude.

Millions upon millions of resolutions are made during January of each year. By February of each year the vast majority of those resolutions are abandoned by people who lacked the one thing they needed more than anything else in order to achieve those resolutions - the right mental attitude. I really like the phrase "right mental attitude." I first heard it when I read the book, "Think and Grow Rich: A Black Choice." The right mental attitude is an attitude of success and accomplishment. There is a lot of difference between the wrong mental attitude and the right mental attitude including the following:
Wrong Mental Attitude
  • maybe I will succeed at what I attempt
  • if I do my best it doesn't matter if I reach my goal or not
  • I should make a lot of plans and be satisfied if I get a lot of them done
Right Mental Attitude
  • I will succeed at something if I set my mind to it
  • if I do my best, and work smart instead of merely hard, I will reach my goal
  • I should succeed at all I attempt because I have properly planned my course of action
.
.

At the start of the new year, while you are planning what you are going to do, while you are getting set to take action now, before you do anything else, sit down and get the right mental attitude. It is the right mental attitude that will prepare you for success more than any book you will read, more than any seminar you will attend. There is nothing more important when you are taking action now than

Serene Sunday- New Look at Parents/Kid Relationships - We're Not Friends

***
WE HAVE MOVED TO A NEW LOCATION: SAME GREAT CONTENT, GREAT NEW LOCATION
PLEASE VISIT US AT OUR NEW LOCATION
***

Serene Sunday - there is serenity in realizing that you are supposed to be a parent, not a friend.

Each serene Sunday throughout the month of January will take a new look at ways of looking at the parent/child relationship. In upcoming weeks we will look at:
  • parents as stewards
  • raising children to leave and cleave
  • what will your kids shrink say later
This week, the serene Sunday article is all about the fact that you are not your children's friend, you are a parent, so act like it.

photo credit: cheriejoyful via photopin cc
photo credit: cheriejoyful via photopin cc
Parenting techniques, like fashions, seem to flow in circles. Ideas that were once radical and cutting edge become dated and fall out of use, only to be seen as new again years later. In my recent travels, I have come across some parents who tell me I should treat my children as equals and as my friends. I don't understand how that idea works. My children range in age from 5 to 16. I do not have any friends in that age range. I have a husband, children, a mortgage, bills, a business, a blog and am looking for more income. Outside of being related, there is nothing that would lead me to be friends with people I would meet in this age range.

Beyond all that, I am the parent to my children. With the role of parent comes a whole different set of goals and responsibilities. When children are poorly behaved and get hooked on drugs, everyone wants to know where the parents were. No one says, "What kind of friends raised those kids?" No one indeed. Instead, people rightfully wonder what were the parents doing when when the children were running around using drugs.

As a parent, it is my job to help my children go from childhood to adulthood with a set of morals, values, talents and skills that will allow them to stand on their own in the world and be successful and productive. The following are among the differences in the roles and characteristics of parent and friend:

Friends
  • status is equal between participants
  • no party is responsible for the other
  • no party has absolute veto over the actions of the other
 Parent/Child Relationship
  • there is an imbalance of power with the parent being in the power position
  • the parent is legally and morally responsible for the child
  • the parent has absolute veto power of the actions of the child
..
Serene Sunday, parent and child, relationship, friendship

The role of parent is a major and important one. It is interesting because it is one of the few jobs you have almost no qualifications beyond biology to get. That does not change the fact that the role of parent is one of the most important roles a person ever plays. The relationship between parent and child is of crucial importance in each home, and in the world at large. So the question for you this serene Sunday is how do you describe the relationship between  you and your children?

Sensational Saturday - A New Look at Old Stories

Sensational Saturday - it is sensational to take a new look at an old classic book.

Most people have read Aesop's fables at some point in their lives. Many school children are taught morals and values via Aesop's fables at school. His story The Tortoise and The Hair is something that almost every person has heard of and referred to at least once in life.

Recently I have been reading Aesop's fables to my now ten year old son as a bedtime story. Initially I started to read him the stories to teach him some life lessons in a subtle way. Often children don't want to be beat in the head with lessons at the end of the day. So I would flip through the stories for one that matched whatever I was trying to teach him that day. While doing that I had an opportunity to read a few more of the stories myself.

An interesting thing happened while reading the stories. What was supposed to be a two or three minute reading of a story turned into a 15 or 20 minute time of talking with my son about his views on life, present and future. It was interesting to get his take on the stories. I was surprised at how quickly he grasped the point of each story and was able to apply then to real life situations. It was interesting that on many occasions he did not see how to apply the lessons to his own behavior when he initially heard the stories. However on quite a few occasions, two or three days later he would see how a story related to him personally, the reason I read the story to him

I like the Aesop's fables now, not for the moral lessons they provide. Now I like the fables for the opportunity they gave me to talk with my son and to get to know him a little better. So, the question for you this sensational Saturday is what bedtime story do you share with your children?

Fantastic Friday - Balancing Home and Work with Technology

Fantastic Friday - it is fantastic to use technology to balance home and work.

A few months ago my husband, Darren, was doing work that required him to travel out-of-state for two weeks at a time and then work at home for two weeks. Our family is a close one. We enjoy each other's company and like to hang out, laugh, watch movies and music videos together. So having him gone for extended periods for a long period of time was hard on all of us. But, I put on my big girl panties and my fake it until I make it dress and decided to make the best of the situation. I put technology to work and created a work around.

photo credit: caribb via photopin cc
photo credit: caribb via photopin cc                                                                                                   fantastic Friday, technology, home and work balance
First I gave my son a pre-paid cell phone and let him text his father as much as he wanted. Even though Darren could not always text back immediately, he would text back when he was able and this made my son feel like he was still in touch with his dad. My teenie bopper already had her own cell phone with unlimited texts and she and her dad had some great conversations throughout the day. My twins got me to send emails to their daddy during the day and liked it when he responded to them later in the day.

Second, and this has a funny story attached, we used Skype. Each morning my husband and I would start a Skype call and as the children woke up they could come and talk with their dad. They all got to see their dad and pray with him before they went to school. At dinner time I would put the computer on the kitchen counter and we would all eat dinner together. The kids also had private conversations by taking the computer with them to another room. It really made the children feel better to be able to see their Dad each day. The funniest thing is that Darren and I would start a Skype call in the evening and each go about doing whatever we had to do: I would write and do household stuff, Darren would work on his sales stuff. It was nothing fancy, just living life, but being able to see and hear each other. A few times we fell asleep with the call still going on and the teenie bopper walked in because she heard her father snoring. She laughed at us falling asleep together.

Every business can open a Facebook account for free. Every business can open a Twitter account for free.  Every business can open a Pinterest account for free. Every business can open a Tumblr account for free.  Every business can open a Google+ account for free.

Many old, established and successful businesses are reluctant to do marketing and outreach via social media. These businesses want to do what they have always done to succeed. While many of the old established practices will continue to be successful long into the future. There is no reason to ignore some basic truths about today's society. These basic facts include the following:
  • people are using the internet more each day
  • people are looking to social media to help form their opinions and make purchasing decisions
  • people are getting their news from the internet rather than traditional hard copy sources
With these thing being facts, businesses must look toward the internet and social media sources in order to market and do outreach for their businesses. Keep in mind, it was not that long ago that Facebook was seen as "a cute little thing for the young folks." It was not long ago that people wondered why in the world people would talk to each other via text messages rather than telephone calls. Social media is here, and it is here to stay. Do your business a favor and get involved in social media now.
.
Social media is something that businesses can get involved with for little or no money. So, the question for you this  Thrilling Thursday is what is the social media plan for your business?
